AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer Opportunity

The Decatur County Development Corporation is hiring a full-time AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer.

The DCDC VISTA member will create, organize and deliver enrichment activities for K-12 students at 3 schools in Decatur County to enhance knowledge of business opportunities in rural Iowa. These activities will encourage students to remain in school, learn about a profession that piques their interest, and ensure they know what tools will be necessary to live and work in a rural area without being in poverty.

The VISTA will create and lead two programs to connect business leaders with students so students can learn directly from the experts. These activities will support the development of a future workforce base in the county and combat a local workforce availability challenge.

Objective 1: Establish an internship database for local businesses and high school students to connect

Objective 2: Plan and manage enrichment programs to connect business owners with upper elementary and middle school students to introduce them to possible career opportunities close to home, and the necessary schooling needed

Objective 3: Organize financial literacy courses for residents in Decatur County.

The VISTA will serve as a part of Volunteer Iowa's Rural Development and Opioid AmeriCorps VISTA project. Volunteer Iowa is a state agency whose mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. VISTA members with our program have the benefit of a statewide support network of staff, Commissioners, National Service Programs, fellow AmeriCorps members and a VISTA Leader. Members receive ongoing training, support, networking and professional development opportunities.
